Are Long Distance Relationship Gifts a Good Idea?
Nothing can replace your presence in a relationship--nothing. Obviously, relying on presents alone won't cut it, but sending off a long distance relationship gift as a token of your love can be a welcome surprise for your special someone!
Whether you're happy to have your space or you're missing your partner terribly, here are some cute long distance relationship gift ideas to keep them thinking of you:
1. A Personalized Mug Covered in Your Memories
Have you ever been mug shopping (That's a thing, right?) and thought that all the designs were lame? Did you know that you can just make your own for a fairly low cost?
That's right! No need to hire a whole factory full of mug-makers, you can just create a one-off design using a print-on-demand service. It's not just mugs, you can make T-shirts, cards, and other trinkets, too.
Imagine putting a collage together in Photoshop of all your favorite moments with your partner, then having them immortalized on a coffee cup that your partner can drink from every day. Now that's a long distance relationship gift that can keep them thinking of you!
2. Useful (or Violent) House Plants
Just because you're far apart from each other, that doesn't mean your relationship can't grow. What better way to symbolize this than with a plant?
Every time you visit your partner, you'll get a chance to see how the plant changed over time, which is something special that you probably wouldn't have noticed had you been at their house every day.
Get your partner a plant that grows well indoors, like lucky bamboo. If they are trying to connect to their inner farmer, you can also give them seeds (or seed paper) with herbs that they can grow and harvest from their windowsill.
If you think most plants are too boring, maybe something more carnivorous is up your alley. How about a Venus flytrap? How about a dozen Venus flytraps? Or a pitcher plant? If your partner has an insect problem at home, these would serve a great duel purpose of being decorative and deadly. You could bond by watching the (very slow) violence.
3. Mystery Boxes
Don't really know what to get for long distance relationship gifts? No problem, let the gods roll a dice and decide for you!
Mystery boxes are surprise gift collections that are packaged with random items, usually chosen by the company you bought them from. Most often, they are themed, so you do have some idea of the category of items that might be inside.
There are video game themed boxes, snack themed boxes, jewelry themes boxes, cosplay themes boxes, and more. This works great if you have an idea of the kind of stuff your partner is really into, but don't share the same hobby. Let the experts handle it!
4. Snacks From Around the World
Do you travel a lot? Is this the reason you're in a long distance relationship in the first place?
Why not put together a box of goodies from the places you're visiting? These make good long-distance relationship gifts because they help include your partner in your travels a little bit, even if you're apart.
In past long-distance situations, I've always been happy to receive tokens from my loved one's travels, even something small like snacks from the airport. (Granted, my standards are not very high for gifts. It's the thought that counts.) The fact that an item is locally rare is what makes it feel like a treasure! Maybe you can pick something up at the convenience store that is not available in your partner's hometown.
Even if you're more of a homebody and you're in a long distance relationship for other reasons, sending interesting snacks from different countries can still be a fun present.
It can even double as a conversation-starter for when you're video chatting. Watch your partner's reactions as they taste what you sent them! (This would actually be a good theme for a mystery box, too, since the contents would be a surprise for both of you.)
Your Long Distance Status
5. A Fancy Camera
This is more one of those practical long distance relationship gifts, but if you really don't see each other in person a lot, you might have to spring for the next best thing.
If your partner has an older camera and they look grainy whenever you video chat (or whenever they send you...special pictures), then order a better one for them if you have the funds. Obviously, this can be kind of an investment if you're strapped for cash, but nowadays there are decent quality video cameras for just a few hundred bucks.
6. DIY Long Distance Relationship Gifts
Why not put something together yourself? Are you into knitting or sewing? Metalwork? Woodworking? You can do a DIY long distance relationship gift!
Use one of your creative hobbies to build a thoughtful present for your significant other. Spending time on something they will love can mean a lot more than simply spending money. It can also be cheaper, especially if you up-cycle! It doesn't matter if you don't consider yourself particularly artistic; what matters is the thought you put into it.
Here are some ideas:
- A drawn or painted depiction of your first date
- A small clay sculpture or origami of their favorite animal
- Homemade jewelry or a beaded necklace with charms that represent things you've done together
Even better, you can put together a series of handmade items and offer them a whole collection of crafts that remind you of them. Attach a letter that tells them what each item means and you have a great birthday or Christmas present for your long distance partner.
7. A Hand-Written Letter
These days, we send off messages with the tap of a finger. People don't really give their communications that much thought, since you can basically have access to someone 24 hours a day, even if they're a world away (assuming they respond, of course).
But there's something romantic about a hand-written letter. It's about more than the contents of your message, it's also about the time you put into it. Even if your handwriting isn't that great, the stroke of your pen shows off your emotions and the pace of your thoughts on the page much more than if you had typed it. There's also something nice about being able to touch a physical letter that your partner also touched and poured their heart into.
You can do it on beautiful stationary or on a sheet of ripped notebook paper, whatever your style may be.
So write a love letter and do it by hand! Send it through snail mail, too. It will be a pleasant surprise when your partner discovers it among their more mundane bills and bank statements. You can even combine it with some of the previous gifts mentioned.
Use Your Imagination!
Ultimately, these are all just ideas. The sky is the limit, really, if you use your imagination. You might even take some of these suggestions and make your own special twist to surprise your partner on your next anniversary!

The best gift you can give is being there!
Setup travel alerts for discounted airfare through various travel websites such as Travelzoo, Priceline, or Expedia for the location your mate resides.
Eventually someone needs to relocate in order to make it last.
A long distance relationship without a light at the end of the tunnel is likely to fail. It's the counting down of the months, weeks, and days until one is finally done with the inconvenience of being in a long distance relationship that keeps it strong!

I think you have made very good suggestions in your article, Jorge. They are very thoughtful gifts.
