Dance Like No One Is Watching!
Withholding the "Real" Me
When I was younger, I was too insecure to let my hair down, say my opinion with confidence, or to do something crazy or silly if I thought someone could see me doing it. I'm not talking about breaking the law or doing something that may hurt someone; I wouldn't do those anyway. I'm talking about dancing to my favorite song while walking down my driveway. Or skipping along a sidewalk with my niece. In short, being myself in a public setting. Do you ever have that problem?
As I have gotten older, I guess that perhaps it's because I'm not as concerned about the opinions of those who don't know me, but I find I'm a whole lot more likely to be myself, regardless of who's around!
I've had to learn that it's ok to be silly in public (remembering there is a time and place for everything). If I want to waltz with an imaginary partner to the mailbox, I will! And I don't even know how to waltz, but that doesn't stop me!
My family knows that I'm the "silly" aunt at the family get-togethers. My goal is to make the kids giggle. I'm not a jokester and I'm not naturally funny, but I am silly. I am clumsy. And the kids think it's fun to make silly faces in selfies with me.
I'm not afraid to be myself around family! If I have done something that I laughed at myself about, I'll tell the story to others because I'm not afraid of their opinions! They are family, and they will always love me.
Be yourself! It took a little bit of living under my belt to get the hang of it, and I'm still learning. But it's fun to be whoever you are! After I learned that in general I'm a good person (with faults, of course), I've been able to use that to boost my confidence in myself!
Dance Like No One Is Watching!
"Dance like no one is watching." I'm sure most of us have heard this saying before. Be you! Be daring! Be... I don't know, but "be" it! Yeah, that dancing advice wasn't for me! I can't dance on a good day! I do dance in the living room in front of the cats, and they are probably laughing at me!
Yet, when I saw this picture on Pinterest one night, it was so freeing to me! Because the rest of this quote is, "Because they're not. They're checking their phones." Of course they are! They really aren't looking at me!!
What a Relief!
So now if I want to dance a little jig while walking in the mall, I do! Or if I want to hop onto my cart while it's rolling down the hill in the Walmart parking lot, I do!
Every year for the Susan G. Komen Foundation's breast cancer walk that my mom and I do together, I'll wear a fake pink wig and will look like a loon, but I don't care! It's fun and it hurts no one! It makes my mom smile! Probably because she helped raise that loon, but still, she's smiling, isn't she?
If feels so good to finally let it go! To be myself! It's such a relief!
Go Be "You"!
So go ahead!! Dance! Be silly! Giggle in public! Be the wonderful you that you are hiding inside!
Everyone else is staring at their phones! They aren't (and weren't) watching you anyway!!
Do you dance to your own beat?
