The Power of Scorpio
Scorpio is the eighth sign of the zodiac. It is ruled by Pluto and is associated with matters such as death, hidden legacies, and matters relating to sensuality, regeneration, and renewal. Scorpio is also a water sign. Water signs represent emotionality, creativity, and intuition. Scorpio is a "fixed" sign, meaning that it signifies determination, resoluteness, and an inability to be swayed once one's mind is made. Scorpio's fixed water typology symbolizes a high level of emotionality and creativity.
Scorpio has quite an ignoble and murky reputation. In addition to that, it is a severe sign. This sign does not believe in taking any prisoners nor offering any quarter to anyone. One can say that Scorpio is an extreme sign. Well, to say that Scorpio is a sign of extremes would be the understatement of the year, if not the millennium. There is nothing lukewarm or tepid about the Scorpio persona. They are known to be quite direct people. It is or isn't with them. They are not people to mince words regarding how they feel about a situation.
Scorpios are supreme no-nonsense people. They totally decry hypocrisy on all its forms. They believe in seeing and assessing the truth of the situation. In other words, they cut to the chase. They thoroughly believe in living life on their own terms. They do not believe in pretense. They contend that people should do and say what they mean.
Scorpios have strong feelings and opinions regarding situations and people. They either like or hate them. There is no ambiguity in their being. While many people will go through the formalities and niceties to placate and please others, a Scorpio will either say what is on their mind or simply say nothing at all. They refuse to play nice just to please others.
Scorpios are not prone to care about social approval. They have a high regard for themselves and believe in living by what they believe is right as long as others are not harmed in the process. They believe in living a life of utter and total integrity. If others approve, fine. If they don't, that's fine too. They are not about to worry about whether others approve of them or not. As long as they approve of themselves, that's what is important.
One can aptly say that Scorpio says it like it is. They can call a spade a spade, not say that the spade is a cat. They believe in being spot-on regarding the facts and situation at hand. They feel that it is a sign of maturity and respect to tell people the real situation, not using innuendos when the truth is apter. To use any type of falsity is the epitome of hypocrisy to a Scorpio.
One thing that Scorpios refuse to tolerate is lies. Lies to them is a form of hypocrisy. They figure, why not tell the truth and face whatever consequence there is? If one lies, it will catch up with him/her, sooner or later. They believe that to be truthful is to be an authentic person. To be inauthentic in the eyes of a Scorpio is to be a false person.
Scorpios refuse to tolerate lies for other reasons. To them, lies represent betrayal or untrustworthiness. They view people who lie as quite despicable. They also view people who lie as cowards. They believe that if one was the man or woman he/she is, he/she would be truthful about the situation even if there were dire consequences regarding this truth.
Scorpios are known to be opinionated their beliefs, likes, and dislikes. The mantra of Scorpio is that it is better to be disliked for who they are than to be liked for who they are not. They believe in being true to themselves, not garnering for social and/or other forms of popularity. To tell a Scorpio that if his/her stand on an issue or position is unpopular or unheard of will be ignored. He/she will rather be in the lowest pits of hell than to have an opinion which is deemed popular by consensus. He/she is not the type of person who will go along to get along. He/she will stand by his/her beliefs and opinions no matter what.
Scorpios have extreme emotions in general. They are either highly elated or horrifically dismal. There is no in-between or just average emotions in their eyes. They believe in fully expressing their feelings. This is part of their intense approach to life. To them, this is part of living life to its ultimate juiciness. Emotions and feelings to Scorpios are an integral part of living and being fully human.
An offshoot of their emotionality is that they can be quite temperamental. Scorpios are known for their intense and vitriolic tempers. To say that they go ballistic is putting it mildly. Their tempers are analogous to a raging flood. No one in his/her right-thinking mind would want to get on their wrong side and arouse their temper.
Scorpios can love and hate hard. They do not believe in doing anything halfway. When they love, they love with utter abandon. There is nothing they would not do to please and satisfy the object of their passion. They are passion personified.
Conversely, when they hate someone, it is pure, venomous, unadulterated hatred. Hell has no fury like Scorpio. When they hate, they hate. When they hate, they can be quite unstoppable in seeking revenge against the object of their hatred.
Scorpios can be icy. If they are upset with you, or if you have done them an injustice in one form or another, rather than to cause a scene, they will just ignore and/or sever all ties with you. In their eyes, you are simply a persona non grata. You are simply erased, pure and simple. This applies to relationships and situations. Scorpios are not ones to believe in being in relationships and/or situations that have extended its viability. They are not ones to remain in a toxic relationship and/or situation. When it is over, it is over. They coolly cut all ties, moving on with their lives.
Scorpios can be quite unforgiving, especially if their trust have been betrayed or if they were wronged. They believe in living authentic lives of the utmost integrity. They believe that everyone should do the same. They find it morally abhorrent, inexcusable, and reprehensible to be less than integral. They feel that there are some lines that one should never cross.
Scorpios contain the very best and the very worst of the human condition. Positive and evolved Scorpios symbolize the highest evolution of humankind. To them, nothing is greater than to improve and advance the cause and case for the human condition. This is the Scorpio who in a concentration camp will give up a crust up his bread so that another prisoner can live more one day. Another such Scorpio works tirelessly to assuage the conditions of those in a homeless shelter or halfway house.
These Scorpios are totally caring individuals, oftentimes putting other's needs and concerns before their own. They truly believe that there are humankind's keepers. Work is not work, nor is it just a paycheck. Work to just Scorpios is a calling, a vocation. They see work as a way to use their passion and voice to help others live a better life. They approach relationships with a high level of consciousness and a sense of humaneness. They view themselves as part of the whole and that others are just as important to them. There is nothing they would not do to elevate and enhance the relationship.
These Scorpios believe in using their power judiciously. They see power as a way for the betterment of humankind. They believe in the mantra when much is given in terms of talents, gifts, and/or opportunities, much is expected. They view whatever gifts they have as a blessing which is not to be misused for their own means. They strongly contend that they were given such things for the purpose of serving and helping others have the best life possible.
Negative Scorpios are the images of pure and unadulterated evil. They are literally devils walking the earth. They do not care about what is right or wrong, but what is expedient for the moment. To them, people are just an expenditure to be used and disposed of when they accomplish their goals. They are not above exploiting others for their nefarious means. They rationalize that if others are used, then they allowed themselves to be used. These Scorpios' mottos that either one uses or be used. They figure that everyone uses each other in one way or another.
Negative Scorpios are not above acting in unethical and underhanded ways to achieve their goals. To them, nothing is underhanded if it means achieving their stated goals. They believe that the concept of being unethical and underhanded is in the eye of the beholder. They practice inverse logic and reasoning. To them, good is bad and bad is good. They do what they have to do in order to survive and thrive in this world.
Negative Scorpios take survival of the fittest to another level. They believe that they are the fittest, and others exist at their grace. In fact, they refuse to acknowledge others unless the latter is for the former's gain. They often demoralize and denigrate others for their aggrandizement. They believe that they are the ultimate alphas while others are the lowest betas who exist for their pleasure, no more no less.
Negative Scorpios use power to subdue and enslave others. To them, power is a drug that they cannot do without. They see power as an integral part of their lives. They believe that those who have the power have the unmitigated right to rule the worlds and others. They feel that they should use power in any way that they wish. Nothing pleases them like using power to sway others to their methodology and way of doing them. Many negative Scorpios are Svengalis to those they perceive to be weaker, bending the latter to their will.
In conclusion, Scorpio is the sign of extremes. There is nothing ambiguous or wishy-washy about Scorpios. They have strong likes and dislikes regarding their beliefs, opinions, and issues. They are very passionate about their lives, living in an integrous way. They believe in being authentic people. They do not care about social approval. The most important thing to them is respecting and approving of themselves. They will not live a false and inauthentic live just to conform to a particular societal construct. They decry hypocrisy and lies because no authentic person would do such things. They believe the lies and other forms of unethical behavior are inexcusable and intolerable.
Scorpios embody the extremes of human personalities. They represent the very best and the abysmally worst in human consciousness. Positive Scorpios have concern for humanity. They use their talents, opportunities, and gifts to help and advance humankind. They feel that they were placed on the earth plane to help people realize their human potential and to help them lead and live better lives. Negative Scorpios have concern for themselves. Everything is about them, and they could care less about others. Others only exist at the behest and pleasure of the negative Scorpio. Their main concern is their own self-aggrandizement. If others are hurt and exploited in the process, in their eyes, so be it.
Scorpio is a sign of much potential. This sign has the power. Scorpios are extremely capable of achieving and attaining their goals. They have the greatest potential to use their immense gifts, opportunities, and talents for good or evil. It's their call.
Questions & Answers
Question: Do Scorpios know how to Love?
Answer: It depends upon the level of the Scorpio. Lower level Scorpios or the scorpion archetype use love as a means of an end. They use love to control or manipulate others. To them, love is just a means of using others or bending them to the Scorpios' wills. These Scorpios can be quite abusive to others & use love as that means. Higher level Scorpios or the dove or eagle archetype love unconditionally & feel that they are there to enrich & nurture others.
Question: Are scorpios kind?
Answer: Yes, Scorpios can be kind. However, Scorpios want to be in positions of power and view kindness as some sort of vulnerability. To Scorpios, being vulnerable is viewed as weakness and weakness means powerlessness. To the average Scorpio, being powerless is analogous to being in the ninth circle of hell. If anything Scorpio wants to be IN CONTROL. Scorpio wants to be in the driver's seat so to speak. Scorpios usually assess the situation before they act. However, if Scorpio elects to exercise kindness and is taken advantage of of-BEWARE, BEWARE!

Hey Dolan, sorry you feel that way and that you’ve had those experiences with Scorpio women. Like the article says, it can go either way. A true Scorpio woman is a giver, empathetic, loyal and honest. Hope your experience with Scorp female improved within the past 2 years :)
Dolna on December 29, 2016:
Scorpio men are comparatively nice..... Make good husbands and Dad. My Da's one and he's a super dad..... Also he looks after my mom :). But Scorpio women.... Less said the better. Nosy, obnoxious, irrationally envious, devious, self centered, rude the list of their vices is unending. From my Scorpio cousin to a colleague my experience of Scorp females has been less than pleasant. I really hate their intrusive questions, their catty comments, backhanded compliments and jealousy. My Scorp cousin hates me just because am the overachiever of my family and takes every opportunity to take cheap potshots at me. Ridiculous and pathetic..... Also these women know how to dish but can't take it. :)

Ambition is good, even welcomed. What I have described in this article is how Scorpio can be extremes in positivity and negativity. There are TWO sides to every characteristic, quality, and situation.
dolph on February 18, 2015:
What the author has described as negative in scorpio is in my view, being a scorpio myself, highly disputable. In my view personal ambition is very important and is foolishly dedcribed as selfishness in this article. Also

Scorpio with Libra on the cusp checking in as well. While I may not believe, or live out my life according to astrology, it contains such strong archetypes that it can't be discounted as a powerful medium. Being a Scorpio has made life slightly easier for me due to the fact when someone asks me what sign I am, I can say, "Scorpio...anything you can say about me, the opposite is equally as true!"
Tanya Jones from Texas USA on October 20, 2014:
For the year that I was born, my day of birth is on the cusp of Libra and Scorpio. I have quite a few of the Scorpio tendencies which overshadow much of what one would associate with a Libra. The phrase running cold and hot comes to mind.

Whoa! How did you get all that information about me? My Zodiac sign is Scorpio. As I was reading, I kept affirming in my head that your information is a very descript explanation of me. I never really looked into Zodiac signs in the past, so reading your publication was very enlightening. In fact, when I read the caption under one of your photos, "... CUT TO THE CHASE...," I almost fell out of my chair because in one of my hubs that was becoming rather long-winded, I wrote the title, "Cut to the Chase" to let the reader know I was wrapping up and getting to the point now. Fascinating information here. I enjoyed reading it.

It is really extensive indeed. Astrology is much more than sun signs. There is so many endless nuances to astrology. I simply love astrology. I never took a formal class but learned it by reading various books. Thank you again Jean for responding. God bless and have a BLESSED night.
Jean Bakula from New Jersey on August 12, 2014:
It is fascinating if you really study it and understand the how extensive the subject really is. I caught the bug at age 10, but didn't take a formal course until I was around 20, at one of those evening classes at high schools they have, with my BF, then husband. He didn't keep up with it, but I did and went on to Tarot. I make a nice little amount of what my Mom used to call "Mad Money" from my readings.

No I am not an astrologer. However, I studied astrology extensively from the time I was eighteen. I find astrology quite a fascinating subject. Thank you for stopping by Jean and adding to the discussion, it is much appreciated in kind.

Nice job on Scorpio, I didn't know you were an astrologer too! With regards to Charles Manson, I look at it like Scorpios can wiggle in the dirt like snakes, or soar like the eagles. And the really spiritual ones attain phoenix status. My son has both a Scorpio sun and moon, and although he looks at me with love, I have seen the results of that icy stare! It cuts through people who annoy him like a lazer beam!

I believe astrology is an entertaining example of Forer effect.
I enjoyed it until I took a course "Your Deceptive Mind: The Scientific Guide to Critical Thinking Skills."
I found the real story of the brain functioning much more fascinating than story-telling. We love stories (I do like them just like everybody else) and science in comparison with story-telling seems dull. But truth proved to be much more interesting than in this case astrological assigning meaning to random noise.
If I tell you that I am a Scorpio, all these characteristics will be easily applied (ascribed) to me and you will see what is not there. What if I am not a Scorpio? (when someone's birthday record is incorrect? My father birthday was registered months after he was born. Happens all the time).
I wish all of us regardless of our signs would be as interested in studying more of what we already know about ourselves, as in "scientifically know". We do hang on to contradictory beliefs, though.
My response might fit the principle "exception proves the rule", but does it? It is illogical. Exception proves the exact opposite. Funny thing, we do see that it is illogical, but still accept it.

Some other noteworthy Scorpios are Bill Gates (Microsoft), Ted Turner (CNN), Teddy Roosevelt (U.S. President), Whoopi Goldberg (Actress), Hilary Clinton (Fmr Secretary of State), Christopher Columbus (sailor), Pablo Picasso (Artist), Condoleezza Rice (Fmr Secretary of State), Julia Roberts (actress), Sean Combs/P-Diddy (Hip/Hop Mogul), Matthew McConaughey (actor). Johnny Carson (Late night TV host), Nelly (Rapper), Leonardo DiCaprio (actor), and of course yours truly! (to name a few) LOL! :-)

Thank you for your response. I presented Charles Manson as a prototype of the WORST Scorpio as with Goebbels. Those "people" represent the hellish or worst aspect of Scorpio. Scorpio people are fascinating and worthy of respect.
Christin Sander from Midwest on July 10, 2013:
What a fantastic hub on Scorpios. I am a scorpion born on Halloween - I suppose I was destined to have a love of the metaphysical and paranormal ;). I relate to so much of this hub - except the Charles Manson aspect. I have always felt I can be self-centered, but beneath that I have a true desire to help others see their inner light. I do insist on living life on my own terms, but I dedicate my work to helping others to the best of my ability. I think sometimes I have grown into a bit of a cynic when it comes to humanity as a whole, but I believe it was George Carlin who said if you scratch the surface of a cynic, beneath you find a wounded idealist. That would be me for sure.
I absolutely have no tolerance for liars and hypocrites. I totally related to that portion. That can bring out the scorpion barbs in me quicker than anything! I can tolerate a lot from people and forgive a lot, but lies/hypocricy are not one of them. If you have to lie or hurt others to get ahead you are not worthy of respect.
Awesome hub - voted and pinning :)
