15 Healing Quotes for a Broken Heart

Updated on December 12, 2017

Will is a curious writer, always looking to expand and share his knowledge on more subjects than he can keep track of.

A broken heart, we have all been there. But when it happens... surely no one has ever felt this much pain as you do right now, right? Friends and family, they try to comfort you, but in the end there's still you. Only you and your aching heart.

That's what happened to me. I am doing a little better now, but it is not easy. I found these inspirational quotes a little comforting. I hope they will help you too.

Best of luck, to both of us...

"There is no remedy for love but to love more."
-- Henry David Thoreau

"It has been said that time heals all wounds. The truth is that time does not heal anything. It merely passes. it is what we do during the passing of time that helps or hinders the healing process."
-- Jay Marshall

"By far the strongest poison to the human spirit is the inability to forgive oneself or another person. Forgiveness is no longer an option but a necessity for healing."
-- Caroline Myss

"In three words I can sum up everything I've learned about life: it goes on."
-- Robert Frost

"Forgiving does not erase the bitter past. A healed memory is not a deleted memory. Instead, forgiving what we cannot forget creates a new way to remember. We change the memory of our past into a hope for our future."
-- Lewis B. Smedes

"The hardest thing you can do is smile when you are ill, in pain, or depressed. But this no-cost remedy is a necessary first half-step if you are to start on the road to recovery."
-- Allen Klein

"There is something beautiful about all scars of whatever nature. A scar means the hurt is over, the wound is closed and healed, done with."
-- Harry Crews

"When a child is hurt or sick what happens? It reaches out to you for comfort. It reaches out to you and wants to be held. It wants to feel your touch. It needs to feel your love. To breath your love. And how are you any different than the child when you are hurt and sick?"
-- Ian Paul Marshall

"When one door closes, another opens; but we often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door that we do not see the one which has opened for us."
-- Alexander Graham Bell

"The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong."
-- Mahatma Gandhi

"Some of us think holding on makes us strong; but sometimes it is letting go."
-- Herman Hesse

"A final comfort that is small, but not cold: The heart is the only broken instrument that works."
-- T.E. Kalem

I was unable to find out who the author was for the final three quotes. I consider leaving them out as a result, but decided against that. I think you will agree I made the right call...

"As I look back on my life, I realize that every time I thought I was being rejected from something good, I was actually being re-directed to something better."
-- (Unknown)

"Relationships are like glass. Sometimes it's better to leave them broken than try to hurt yourself putting it back together."
-- (Unknown)

“Healing doesn’t mean the damage never existed. It means the damage no longer controls our lives.”
-- (Unknown)

I am totally in love with a musician, He drinks too much he smokes too much and dosent eat properly. He is also a depressive who binge watches day time television! He is rude and sarcastic but I get him!

Goosebumps appear all over me when i hear him play and I am filled with intense joy and contentment. The way he plays is unique, I marvel at the sounds he is able to coax out of his instrument like no one else I have ever heard

In my head I know that if he was mine the reality would be different.

I detest smoking, the smell that lingers and seeps into hair and clothes and even skin.

I abhor the stench of stale alcohol on breath that should be sweet.

He coughs and wheezes from too many roll ups.

But how sexy he looks when he very deliberately takes a paper, holds the little white filter in his mouth while he makes the thinest rollie possible and the shiver i feel when he slowly licks the paper to seal it.

I dream about ironing his shirts and cooking him healthy nutritious meals while he plays his saxophone, that would mean he really was mine.

However when i am thinking rationally and admit to myself that the incredible sex scenes that I conjure up in my head are hardly likely to happen with a man whose passions lie in the bottom of a glass.

The brown and yellow nicotine stains that appear on fingers and teeth are enough to make me wonder if i do really want to kiss him.

But then he takes up his saxophone,I watch the way he lovingly holds it, he closes his eyes and takes a breath and the minute I hear the first notes I melt inside and want him so much it hurts.

he does not want me!!! today i found out he is sleeping with someone who is slim with thick hair I am devastated i still want him so much

Hi all.. Today I broke up with my boyfriend. I thought I had it all together until I had my friend text him with her picture. She didn't even give her name. He asked where she was etc. When I called him I asked him where he was. He said he knew it was me. He lives 80 miles from me. I also did the same for my friend. Both guys responded now we are upset..her more than me. I don't know if I can trust. He always told me No your a jealous woman. But texts don't lie..so he was busted. My heart hurts. I feel like I was hit by a bus. He even told me he loved me. I know better. I wonder how many women he was seeing while seeing me. Am I crazy for setting him up when I had the idea he was cheating? Was I wrong ? Help

Where to run to or how to cope is what I don't know. Am 8 weeks pregnant and my boyfriend announced to me over the phone that he can't marry me because his pastor said so. This is a relationship of 9 years. Help me please

Don't worry about it Lee. Give yourself time to heal, as long as you need. When the time comes you'll start to reflect on things, but things in a less black & white perspective. You'll get there, I know you will. Keep going!

You can do this Jade, you have already taken the most important step by letting go of those strings. It may not feel that way right now, but things will slowely get better from here on. I am cheering for you & your happiness!

I am in the first days of my broken heart...I came here because I had no where else to go. My door is closed. We haven't finalized anything but he said he has detached himself emotionally from me...indifference is the worst thing he has ever done to me (and trust me, there has been a lot). I decided to let go of the strings I was desperately trying to grasp...

This hurts beyond what I can imagine but I will try and read these quotes whenever I am at my weakest.

        Sigh...here we go again.

Thank you so much for these quotes... I couldn't help but smile when I read "A final comfort that is small, but not cold: The heart is the only broken instrument that works." *sigh* I guess that's at least something huh?

Thank you! I hand picked them when I needed them most... it took me a ridiculously long time too because of how I felt at the time :)

Now they will remain here always for whomever needs them at certain moments in their lives.

@Kris, I know what that's like. It's definitely okay to linger for a bit, reflect on things. I think the grief if you will is an important step towards healing. Just be absolutely clear to yourself that the door has in fact closed. Look for beauty wherever you can and love will find you again... probably where you aren't looking.

These quotes describe my exact situation. My favourite:

"When one door closes, another opens; but we often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door that we do not see the one which has opened for us."

I'm stuck in the limbo of not wanting to leave the closed door, and not wanting to enter the new one.

I really liked this one..."The hardest thing you can do is smile when you are ill, in pain, or depressed. But this no-cost remedy is a necessary first half-step if you are to start on the road to recovery."

        -- Allen Klein

So true. People who embrace their healing journey with humor, love, patience and joy are way further ahead than those that don't.
